Plot
An aspiring actor undergoes a radical medical procedure to transform his appearance, but her new dream face soon turns into a nightmare. [Final lines; to Edward] Oswald: Oh, my friend, you haven't changed one bit. Referenced in Amanda the Jedi Show: The BEST and Weirdest Movies You (Mostly) Haven't Seen | Love Lies Bleeding (2024). I may be the first reviewer here to have seen this film in a theater rather than at a film festival.
To me, it was pure drama
This may affect my review, as there was only one other person in the theater with me. As it is a part comedy, I found nothing funny. Sebastian Stan plays Edward, a significantly disfigured man. Edward is racking his brains over whether he wants to make it as an actor, as his only role was a workplace video about teaching tolerance.
It certainly does
In general, he's a sad guy, but he comes alive when he spends time with his attractive and friendly neighbor. Edward takes part in a study that can change his deformity. He ends up looking like Sebastian Stan. A bit over the top.
I mean it literally
You'll know what I mean when you see it. There's a lot of potential in the premise of how this change would affect someone. But the film never reaches the heights it could. Instead, we see the introduction of yet another disfigured character, leading to a confusing story that's not entirely clear what it's supposed to say.
Is confidence beauty?
Make the most of what you have? Don't you trust your neighbors? The last half hour really gets out of hand. I started to dislike every character and left the theater feeling like I'd just watched a movie with a lot of wasted potential.
