Ernest Cole was one of South Africa's first independent black photographers, whose early photographs, shocking when first published, exposed to the world the lives of black people under apartheid. Cole fled South Africa in 1966 and lived in exile in the United States, where he photographed New York City extensively, as well as the United States.
