John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to "forget" his Montana accent and reverts to his usual Southern California accent. Kevin Costner is the patriarch of a dynastic ranch as big as some countries.
His lifestyle is constrained by resort developers, tribal rights and the authority of the state of Montana
He tries to hold on to the old ways, reminiscent of Rock Hudson in "Giants." "Yellowstone" moves quickly and without much introduction, yet the story unfolds at the natural pace of a day in the wilderness, with breaks for tribal rituals, cowboy conventionalities and political machinations. It's a wide-ranging undertaking that treads on the nexus of laws and justice, family and friendships.Costner seems to take on the role of his character naturally.
The land and family are his lifeblood
He's a world-weary man who has seen too much and lied too often. He can hear the footsteps coming his way, but he can only fulfill his role out of habit as much as loyalty.Although some actions are a little confusing due to a lack of explanation, it feels natural, as if the viewer is getting a real glimpse into another world's life.
I'm raising my grade to a "9"
I hope the resolution of this saga includes an emotional payoff that justifies its breadth and attention to detail.Update 7/20/18: After four episodes, this series has a strong voice and a consistent rhythm. We experience the fullness of each story, from the roots to the fruits.
