Plot

A family is invited to spend the weekend in a secluded village, but as the weekend progresses, they realize that there is a dark side to the family that invited them. James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis share what elements of their characters they use. While discussing their different approaches to the craft, they find each other most intriguing and complimentary. The story is inspired by Christian Tafdrup, director of the original Danish film Speak No Evil (2022), who befriended a Dutch couple while on vacation. Although the Dutch were somewhat socially awkward, the two couples got along well, and upon returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from a Dutch family to come to Holland. He briefly considered it, but decided that it would be strange for him to stay with people he didn’t really know; his story for the film came about when he unleashed his darkest fantasies about what might have happened if he had agreed (claiming that the original Dutch couple never harbored any ill feelings).

In this remake, the nationalities of both families are changed to American and British. Who would have thought that an American remake of a film that’s barely two years old and already 80% in English would save the studio? But here we are. This version is infinitely better, less frustrating, and, dare I say, actually satisfying.

The biggest improvement?

James McAvoy is a powerhouse. Honestly, just put this guy in every horror movie from now on, especially if he’s the villain. He’s so good you can almost hear him whispering, “Watch me steal every damn scene.” And of course he does. what. Time.Speak No Evil is, in my opinion, one of the best horror movies of the year. Characters who actually deserve to be rooted for.
